Six migrants, including a little girl, were found drowned on a beach near Tripoli, the Red Crescent said Wednesday, as they attempted to cross the Mediterranean to south Europe.
“Six bodies – two women, a little girl and three men – were recovered on the beach in Garaboulli , 60 kilometres east of Tripoli,” spokesman Malek Mersit told AFP.
“None of the victims has yet been identified, but it is almost certain that they were migrants who drowned at sea,” he added.
Libya’s 2000km kilometres of coastline – just a few hours across the waters from Europe – is a popular jumping off point for migrants desperate to build a new life in europe.
Over 2800 people have died this year during the perilous crossing.
